4-Hers rake leaves for CA volunteers

Almost two dozen members of the Shackelford County 4-H got together right before Christmas to rake leaves in the yards of several loyal volunteers at Closet Angels. The club regularly performs community service projects. Courtesy Photo

About 20 Shackelford County 4-H members took part in the club’s annual leaf-raking community service project on Wednesday, Dec. 20, in the final club activity of 2023.

“Riley Reames and Heather Nitschke totally handledthat,”Shackelford County extension agent Kelsey Bell said. “They did theyardsfortheladiesthat volunteer for Neighbors in Need.”

Most of the club’s January schedule centers around the county stock show, scheduled for Thursday- Saturday, Jan. 18-20.

“4-H is going to do a cleanup day on Monday, Jan. 8,” Bell said. “We’ll clean the office and bathrooms, sweepthebleachers and those kinds of things.”

Thatdoesn’tmeanthere won’t be other activities, though.

“We’re doing a little horse-judging camp on Thursday (today),” Bell said. “On Sunday (Jan. 7), we’ll have the final commercial steer weigh-in. We’ll do that at 2:00 p.m. at the Rathjen Ranch.”

Record books for those projects are due Tuesday, Jan. 9, at Bell’s office.

The District 7 Food Challenge is scheduled for Wednesday,Jan.24,atSan Angelo.

“In amidst the stock show, all our Food Challenge teams are continuing to practice weekly,” Bell said.
