Church celebrates 114th year

On April 28 Trinity Episcopal Church will celebrate the 114th anniversary of its recognition as an established, official congregation.

Even though there was a small congregation of Episcopalians in Albany in the early 1870s, the church was not officially recognized until 1910.

“There will be much joy andthanksgivingatTrinity Episcopal as our vicar, Rev. Doug Thomas, will preach andcelebrateHolyCommunion,” said Larry Bell, Senior Warden of the church. “All baptized persons are invited to participate.”

The altar and lectern will be decorated in white in observance of the Easter season, he said.

In addition to the anniversary, Trinity is celebrating major external repairs and a complete new paint job. The repairs are the result of the hail storm of May 2023. The church’s exterior has been restored to its historic white color.

“Trinity, originally built as a Methodist church, is the oldest church building in Albany and has two historical markers,” Bell said. “It is the second oldest wood frame building in Albany, the Jackson Warehouse a few years older.”

Rev. Thomas has been Trinity’s vicar for three years, having previously served as its supply pastor for several years. Dr. Thomas served as professor and Department Chair of Psychology at Hardin Simmons University for over 20 years.
