MHS students stay busy with spring contests

Moran FFA stayed busy last week with events in Stephenville,Lubbock,and Wichita Falls.

On Wednesday, April 10, veterinary science and horse judging teams competed at the Area IV contest at Tarleton State

On Thursday, April 11, 10 students went for Welding Certification at Wichita Falls. That was also the site of the Braunvieh State Show held Thursday-Sunday, April 11-14.

On Saturday, April 13, the meat judging team won the Area IV contest in Lubbock to qualify for state.

The meet judging team of Ellis Hise, Cotten Campbell, Caleb York, and Rayni Vinson scored 2,039 points.

“That’s the highest score they’ve ever brought in,” Moran superintendent Dr. John Denson said. “That gives us back-to-back first places at that contest.”

Hiseprovided280points by getting a perfect score in retail ID.

“I’ve taken nine teams to state over the years,” Denson said. “This is my first student to ever get a perfect retail ID score.”

The state contest will be April 27 at Texas A&M.

Hise is also qualified in ready writing for the Region II-1A UIL Academic contest, scheduled for the same weekend in San Angelo.

In the welding event, seven students earned eight certificates. Max Oliver and Kielar Carr were certified for stick. Oliver placed eighth out of 76 welders in the stick weld competition.

Earning MIG downhill certification were Campbell, Hise, York, and Tyler Hale, all of whom earned MIG certification last year. Vinson and Oliver earned MIG certification.Also participating were Zech Henderson, Jayla Bussell, and Bradee Stautzenberger.

Moran now has three stick certified welders and seven MIG certified welders on campus.

In the Braunvieh State Show, MaeKayla Kersey claimed Reserve Grand Champion heifer after winning her class. Henderson was second and Kacenda Thompkins was fourth in the same class.

At Tarleton State, the vet science team of Stautzenberger, Chase Murk, Thompkins, and Bussell placed third. Competing in horse judging were Henderson, Vinson, and Miguel Rodriguez.

Test Time

Moran has continued STAAR testing this week after reading tests for third through eighth grades were administered last week

“English I and English II tested early this week, with biology, fifth and eighth grade science tests Thursday (today),” Jo Hise said.

Next week, history, social studies, Algebra I and all other math tests will be administered.

Roundup Time

Moran will hold its Pre-K and Kindergarten Roundup from 12:30-3:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 23 at the high school office
