The Albany Lions and Lady Lions track teams qualified 11 athletes for 12 spots in area competitionThursday,April4at theDistrict10-2AmeetatCisco.

The area meet with District 9-2AwillbeheldThursday,April 11 (today) at Graham. The top four finishers in each event advance to the Region II-2A meet, scheduled for Friday-Saturday, April 19-20 at Springtown.

Field events at the area meet willstartat10:00a.m.withrunning eventsstartingat3:00p.m.

At the district meet, the Albany boys finished fourth with 80 points, advancing four individuals and two relays.

Adam Hill won both hurdles races despite battling a fever and was third in the shot put. Luke Marshall won the pole vault with a career-best jump of 14-6. Breylon Billington was second in the vault, and Jayce Tinkle was third in the 400.

The1600relayofChipChambers, Jaxson Street, Tinkle, and Hill finished second. The 800 relay of Billington, Chambers, Street, and Calhan Fairchild was fourth.

“It was an extremely competitive meet,” boys coach Rod Brittingsaid.“Thefastestsprint relay and 800 relay in the region were there, and probably the second and third fastest mile relays. Adam is going to have the fastest hurdles times and Luke’s got the best pole vault.”

An example of how competitive the meet was can be seen in athletes that just missed advancing. Lanxton Viertel was fifth inbothshotputanddiscus, while Mason McCloy was fifth in the pole vault.

“Lanxton would have won the shot put and discus in the other district,” Brittingsaid.“Masonwent 11-6, and 11-0 won the other district.”

With that in mind, Britting said, the Lions have a good chance to see all qualifiers extend their season.

“The guys that are advancing are going to be competitive,” he said. “We’ve got a real good shot to advance everybody to the regional meet. It’s just a matter of who’s ready to go, who’s healthy. We feel good about what we’ve got and have two more weeks to get better.”

In the girls division, Albany scored 40 points to finish sixth. Kiana Roberson broke her school record in winning the discus and was third in the shot put. She was second at state in both events last year.

“Kiana didn’t have her best day in the shot put, but it was just her second time in the event this season,” girls coach Lauren Peacock said. “We know where she stands; we just want to make sure she stays healthy.”

Robersonhasbeenbothered by a back problem that kept her out of competition until late March.

Also qualifying were Chey’Anne Weaver in the discusandfreshmenZayne Lefevre and Ashlyn Miller in the 400.

“Chey’AnnePR’edbysix or seven feet in the discus,” Peacock said. “That’s one thing we’ve been on the girls about this year – it just takes one jump, one throw. It can be anybody’s day on a given date.”

Weaver’s success was offset by junior hurdler Avery Everitt missing out after advancing the last two years. Everitt was fifth in the 100 hurdles and sixth in the 300 hurdles despite running careerbest times in both.

“Avery was disappointed not to advance because last year those times were good enough,” Peacock said. “I think she’s going to come back even stronger, faster, and better next year. She has some unfinished business.”

Lefevre finished second in the 400 with Miller third. Miller also placed sixth in the high jump.

“Zayne ran well in the 400,” Peacock said. “We weren’t even sure Ashlyn was going to make it around the track in prelims. She was really sick and squeezed by.”

In the JV boys division, Albany scored 142 points, missing the team title by a point. The JV Lions won all three relays. Jack Nail won the long jump, Tony Wheeler won the pole vault, Wesley Gleitz won the 400, and Zane Green won the 200.

In JV girls,Alli McDaniel was second in both the shot put and discus to account for all 16 of Albany’s points.
