The Albany Lions tennis team got its final tuneup before the district tournament Thursday, April 11 with a partial lineup competing in a round-robin format held by Abilene Christian at Rose Park Tennis Center

Albany will return to Rose Park Monday-Tuesday, April 22-23 for the District 10-2A tournament.

In the last week’s event, seven Albany entries won 11 of 26 matches against opponents from ACS, Jim Ned, and Cornerstone Christian.

“We had some conflicts with track, FCCLA, STAAR makeup tests, and some were sick,” Albany coach M.J. Reneau said. “We took who we could, and everyone who went got in some good matches.”

The mixed doubles pair of Abi Hale and Jake Hale went 4-0, while the girls double pair of Jaci Chapman and Robyn Trail and the boys doubles duo of Woods Peterson and Brayden Watson both went 3-1.

“All of the doubles had really good matchups,” Reneau said. “We made some good connections with coaches. We’ll try to set something up for practice after district.”

Albany struggled in singles, with Cason Fairchild beating teammate Casey Estridge for the lone win in six matches.

“Cason didn’t have his doubles partner, but I felt like it was good for him to have to play singles,” Reneau said. “It just changed the whole game for him.”

Caroline Chapman and Charlee Hefner each went 0-4 in girls singles.

“That was Caroline Chapman’s first singles tournament, and that’s what she’s going to play at district,” Reneau said. “It was good for her to get a tournament under her belt.”
